The Vada Gimlet - A Luxury Collection Cocktail Inspired by Thailand

At Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, A Luxury Collection Hotel Bangkok, you can now discover the pleasures of the Thai-inspired Vada Gimlet, an evocative meeting of East and West that breathes new life into a classic cocktail.

The original Gimlet has a rich history. A simple blend of gin and Rose’s lime cordial, it was drunk by British naval officers in the 19th century. The drink’s namesake, Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette, is said to have added lime juice to gin to mask its bitter taste and to help prevent scurvy, a common illness among sailors of the time caused by a deficiency of Vitamin C.  The venerable cocktail also made an appearance in Raymond Chandler’s 1953 crime noir novel, The Long Goodbye. The book’s protagonist Philip Marlowe narrates the story and recalls a meeting with the character Terry Lennox as he pines for a foreign tradition: We sat in a corner of the bar at Victor's and drank Gimlets. “They don't know how to make them here,” he said. "What they call a Gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice and gin with a dash of sugar and bitters. A real Gimlet is half gin and half Rose's Lime Juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow."

Respectful of tradition but inspired by indigenous flavors and botanicals, mixologists at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok, worked closely with chefs at the hotel’s award-winning Thai restaurant, basil, to create a signature Luxury Collection cocktail that would complement their authentic cuisine and flair for contemporary presentation. The result is the Vada Gimlet, an exceptional cocktail that reflects the unique qualities of this enchanting destination.

The perfect balance of local tastes, the Vada Gimlet lifts the refreshing citrus notes of Hendrik’s gin with the gentle spicy warmth of Thai chilies and fragrant lemongrass-infused agave, while a garnish of Thai basil pressed gently in the hand releases oils that add an engaging hint of licorice and aniseed to the exotic mix. Shaken and served on the rocks in an old fashioned glass, the Vada Gimlet infuses your evening with an indigenous Thai touch.

Forward more than six decades and Chandler’s character Terry Lennox would no doubt be found in Bangkok’s premier live jazz venue, The Living Room, sipping a chilled Vada Gimlet, nodding with surprised approval at the distinctly modern Thai interpretation of his favorite cocktail and declaring “they certainly do know how to make them here.” Guests of Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit can also enjoy the refreshing and aromatic blend at the relaxed jazz lounge while the improvised beats of international stars punctuate the night. With stellar performances from extraordinary talent including Grammy Award winners and the most respected musicians on the jazz scene today, tasteful décor, a sweeping bar, comfortable sofas, and subdued lighting, The Living Room is a suitably stylish setting in which to indulge in a Vada Gimlet or two.

Of course, the Vada Gimlet is most at home as a natural partner to the authentic Thai cuisine from which its creators drew inspiration. At basil, the exotic infusion can be appreciated by diners while pouring over the restaurant’s extensive menu of enticing appetizers, delightful spicy salads, fragrant soups and curries, and divine desserts, all made by gifted chefs using the finest and freshest ingredients.

The Luxury Collection signature cocktail can also be ordered at other venues throughout the hotel. It is the ideal pre-dinner drink at Rossini’s, the award-winning Italian restaurant. Also it captures the essence of the tropical garden paradise at The Sala, and kick-starts a night on the dance floor at BarSu.

Evoke the feelings and sensory experiences of Bangkok. Discover the signature Vada Gimlet at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.
